Please, let’s take a moment to appreciate this man. His generosity, his humility and charity towards others. “Are you freezing cold?” How many celebrities have this care? He seems so pleased with himself, you can see the happiness on his face. It melts my heart. You know, these guys spend hours in the cold, doing their job. And it’s not an easy job, especially because of the arrogance of many celebrities. But this man. This man. All the awards. [ps: the soup wasn’t cold, he said that he was joking on Twitter]

tbh i’m surprised nobody’s ever talked about it before but maybe i’m just crazyRight before Sherlock points the gun at the explosives, he looks at John, and it doesn’t look like much, just a general intense-look-between-two-friends-who-are-in-danger. Except for the way…

I’d like to pose a question to the general writing community regarding character development. When I create my characters, I often find myself fleshing out my side-protagonists and secondary characters much faster and more thoroughly than I do my main heroes. I get so frustrated because I’ve got…
I think this is a problem all writers have, really. Main characters are never pleasant to create because there’s so much pressure on writers to create a likeable main character that your reader will be able to relate to— and this mindset is part of the problem. Since when does your main character have to be likeable? That’s total nonsense. Your main character doesn’t have to be goodhearted or noble or even pleasant to be around (many people tend to prefer villains over the heroes, anyway).
Instead of trying to create a “likable” main character, just try to create an interesting main character. And when I say “interesting,” I don’t mean interesting for the reader; I mean that the character should be interesting for you, the writer. Write a character who you’d want to hang out with or even just spend a day following around. Seriously, the reader shouldn’t matter. You’re the one who has to put his time and energy into the characters and the story, and if the character doesn’t interest you, then chances are that he won’t interest anyone else either; the reader will be able to sense whether you’re passionate about a character. So work with whatever eccentric personality types you enjoy writing about or reading about, even if those types all point to stock characters; stock characters give you a starting place, and a fully developed stock character ultimately breaks out his mold so that he’s no longer a stock character.
And, lastly, don’t worry about whether the reader will be able to relate to the main character. If your main character is fully developed and is convincing as a real human being, then your reader will be able to understand what the character’s going through, even if it’s something that’s he’s never experienced firsthand. And, really, that’s all it means for a character to be relatable— not that your reader has gone through the same things as your character but that the events of the story are communicated in such a way that the reader can understand what your character is going through.
CAN YOUR MAC DO THIS? DIDN’T THINK SO.
